Re: upcoming shows

I saw a solo show at The Englert Theater in Iowa City, IA on Nov 30, 2007.  It is what you think... Mason alone.  There were lots of college kids screaming, but they tended to shut up when Mason would talk or start singing.  With the new solo album coming out, I'm guessing quite a few of those might get played.

Someone had posted some clips of the show in Iowa City on YouTube... search for Mason Jennings and Englert.  There are Christmas trees in the background on the stage from some other production.

Re: upcoming shows

Thanks so much for your reply. I'll be sure to check Youtube for those video clips.  Can't wait for his LA show :)

Re: upcoming shows

At the risk of sounding like a wet blanket, the solo shows can be hit or miss. It really depends on how many people are there to see Mason and how many are there to socialize and have a night out. Seated venues are probably better suited to solo shows than standing venues.

In general I feel like his solo stuff is better on record and his band stuff is better live.

Re: upcoming shows

Yeah, I hear ya.  That's why I'm so curious about it.  The show here in LA is a seated venue with a capacity of 280. ive never been to a seated venue before, so to me it seemed a little  "unusual". But I'm there to see Mason and this is a first in couple years, so I'd rather take than leave it! I love hearing his band live and this whole solo thing probably won't make a much of difference to me in the end. Thanks for your input!

Re: upcoming shows

I agree small axe that sometimes the solo tours are hit or miss, but it depends on what you expect.  if your a loud music full band guy dont go to these.  Its quieter and more intimate.  I went to the troubador in LA a few years back for a solo show, and it was suprisingly fun and literally a sing a long with friends.  He talks more and interacts with the crowd more.

Re: upcoming shows

I would agree with these additional comments folks have posted.  Mason does tend to talk and interact with the crowd more.  The Englert was a seated venue (being a restored theater) and, as I said, people were loud and rowdy, but tended to quiet down when he would talk or sing.  A lot of people sing along though.  Be ready for that.  Hopefully the folks around you won't be too drunk/obnoxious and sing louder than Mason.  My sister flew in to visit me and then we drove for 4 hours to see a Dave & Tim concert and the doofus behind us was wasted and sang/shouted almost every single word of every single song.  So, the hit & miss... I totally agree, but it often depends more on the crowd.  Go check it out and hopefully enjoy.

Re: upcoming shows

Definitely worth it. This last Dallas show was solo, and was terrific. We missed the band experience, but it was a ton of fun. Much more talking and storytelling than usual, more varied setlist. The touching songs were more touching, you just didn't get the rockers like "Ain't No Friend of Mine", sadly.

Re: upcoming shows

well thanks you guys, i appreciate all your comments.  im looking forward to the whole intimacy part of it, the storytelling and talking of course.  hopefully i wont be stuck around the rowdy, loud and drunk ones, ha! and i guess i wont be rockin' out that night ;)

but, on the note of touching songs, southern cross is one on my favorites and im wondering if any of you have heard him play this live?  i haven't found a youtube or working audio clip of this on archive.org. Hmmm.... (thinks to herself) will Mason take song requests? :)

Re: upcoming shows

How many artists do you know who take requests?  haha.  If every time a person in the crowd got his wish to hear his favorite song, "Freebird" would be played at every venue I attended...

Ive heard him play "Southern Cross".  Its a good one, just like the rest of them with the exception of "14 Pictures" and "Stars Shine Quietly".  :)

Re: upcoming shows

Funny you should say that, because at the Dallas show he actually asked for requests, during the encore I think. Just once, maybe twice. Can't remember which song won. It wasn't the one we yelled out, though. Californian, "Southern Cross" would be a superb one to request.
